1st Grade at Oak Hill School
First graders are emerging as learners and readers, calling for teachers to both nurture and teach them. Formal literacy instruction begins with a balance between reading children's books for vocabulary and comprehension development and phonics instruction. The students begin the writing process as they learn to edit and revise their pieces to create a final copy. Math instruction consists of using a workbook, manipulatives and problem solving activities for critical thinking.
Two of the favorite thematic units are All About Me and The Fifty Nifty United States, both of which culminate in performances by the students. First graders expand and enrich their learning by attending weekly classes in art, Bible, computer, drama, foreign language, music, and library. Daily classes in physical education and recess with free play keep their bodies fit.
