Hart Roper Named Next Head of Oak Hill School
December 12, 2017
Dear Oak Hill School Community,
On behalf of the Oak Hill School Board of Trustees and Head of School Search Committee, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Hart Roper as our next Head of School, effective July 1, 2018. We are confident that Hart’s unique blend of talents and impressive array of experiences make him the most qualified candidate to lead Oak Hill School into its next chapter.
Our appointment of Hart is the culmination of a four-month search process that drew interest from a wide range of accomplished educators nationwide. Early in the process, we engaged independent school search firm Carney Sandoe & Associates (CSA), whose representatives visited campus and interviewed faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, administrators, and First Presbyterian Church representatives. CSA also gathered information through a survey of the entire Oak Hill community and relied heavily on these perspectives to help us define the most important personal and professional qualities of our new Oak Hill leader.
Next, the Search Committee created a Search Advisory Committee comprised of members of the OHS faculty and administration, past and current parents, and members of the First Presbyterian Church community. We counted on this Committee for input as well as the feedback collected from the community in reaching our decision. The Search Committee worked diligently to identify candidates and to conduct multiple interviews over the past several weeks culminating with the three finalists’ visits.
Ultimately, the Search Committee reached a clear and unanimous decision that the breadth of Hart’s experience, especially with regard to finance, admissions, and strategic planning; his humble and empathic style; and most importantly, his expression of his deep faith create an ideal fit for the role of the next Head of School at Oak Hill.
Hart says, “Throughout the search process, I felt a strong connection to Oak Hill’s mission and vision for education. As I visited classrooms and talked with teachers, I was deeply impressed by the faculty’s care for each child and desire for continuous improvement. The students’ excitement for learning bubbled throughout campus. From my first meeting with Miss Roxie to my last meeting with the search committee, I was struck by the genuine warmth of the community and the excellence of an Oak Hill education. Clearly, it is a very special place. Colleen, our children, and I are humbled and honored to join the Oak Hill family.”
Hart grew up in Richmond, Virginia and is a graduate of Davidson College, where he majored in History and was captain of the varsity soccer team. In 2008, he completed an M.A. in Educational Leadership at the Klingenstein Institute at Columbia University. He and his family relocated to Nashville in 2015 when he became first, Director of Major Gifts and Special Projects and later served as Director of Strategic Initiatives/Associate Director of Development at Montgomery Bell Academy.
Prior to his move to Nashville, Hart spent 14 years at St. Albans School, an Episcopal school for boys in grades 4-12, in Washington, D.C. During his tenure at St. Albans, he was a lower school teacher, varsity soccer coach, Lower School Dean of Students, and Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. He also did effective work in increasing diversity at St. Albans.
Hart and his wife, Colleen, have four children: Mary (12), Sarah (9), Thomas (7), and Daniel (5). We look forward to welcoming the Roper family to Oak Hill in the coming months.
We are thankful for the hard work and wisdom of the Search Committee, the helpful insights of Search Advisory Committee, and the valuable input we received from all constituents in the school community. We also want to express our continued thanks to Brenda Boon, Interim Head of School, and her team for their continued leadership and excellence. Through this collaborative process, we have fine-tuned our vision for the future, and we are deeply grateful that Hart has chosen to join us as we move forward.
