Weekly Ticker - August 28, 2016

Week of August 28, 2016

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Parent Preview Night for parents of students in first through third grade is this Thursday, September 1, at 6 p.m. Parents should enter through the main school entrance at South Porch across from the flagpole.

  • We will be testing Blackboard Connect, the school’s emergency notification system, tomorrow, August 29, at 4 p.m. At that time, you will receive an email, text and voice message, indicating that we are testing the system. Please remember that this only a test and no action is required.

  • During morning drop-off, please be aware that South Porch is the designated drop-off location for PreK families only. Students in Kindergarten and all other grades may be dropped off at North and West Porches. Additionally, barricades are placed at South Porch at 7:55 a.m. to prepare for Flag Raising. If you would like to park and walk your child into school, please park in the tiered lot.

  • PreK parents, please join us for a parent meeting on Tuesday, September 13, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., to discuss kindergarten readiness and navigating the admissions process for kindergarten at Oak Hill School or any other independent school. All PreK parents are invited to attend.

  • Dads, the first OHS Dads monthly coffee is this Friday, September 2, 7:30 a.m. - 8 a.m., in the Dining Hall. Please stop by for some early morning snacks, coffee and fellowship. There is no formal program at these gatherings and no RSVP is required. Hope to see you there!

  • The OHS Fall/Winter Consignment Sale is scheduled for September 15-17. If you do not have time to consign, you can still help OHS by donating gently used children’s clothing, OHS school uniforms, shoes and toys in good condition to be tagged and sold by volunteers with 100 percent of the proceeds going to OHS. Just drop your donations in the bins in the Rotunda, now through Tuesday, September 6. For more information about items accepted, please click HERE. Donations of wire hangers will also be accepted in the bins.

  • Calling all moms! The OHS Professional Moms, or PMs, is a group of moms that meets quarterly in a social setting to assist the school in a variety of ways, from stuffing invitations, preparing items for Round Up or tagging clothes for the consignment sales. The PMs provide a great way to connect with other parents, while volunteering for the school outside of regular school hours. The first gathering is planned for Wednesday, September 7, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., at the home of Melissa Tabb. The PMs will hang, price and organize the donated used uniforms for the consignment sale. Please be on the lookout for further details from your grade-level PM representative. In the meantime, please contact co-chairs Melissa Tabb, mtabb2004@gmail.com, or J’Anne Cox, jannecox615@gmail.com, if you have any questions.

  • Singapore Math is our new approach for teaching math at OHS. We will hold parent information sessions to provide an overview of the Singapore Math approach on Monday, September 12, for parents of students in 3rd and 4th grades, and Tuesday, September 13, for parents of students in kindergarten through 2nd grade. Both sessions will be held from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m., in the Choral Hall. These parent information sessions will be led by Sarah Schaefer, the Singapore Math consultant who conducted training with OHS teachers. We hope you will attend to gain a better understanding of the Singapore Math approach.

  • It’s not too late to sign up for the first session of Explorations mini-classes. Mini-classes will start the week of September 6. Click HERE to view the full schedule on the Explorations website and to register. The deadline to register is Sunday, September 2.

  • We are pleased to support First Presbyterian Church’s volunteer efforts for a Habitat for Humanity Build, September 17 through October 9, to construct a home for a local family in need. This is a great opportunity to fellowship with other OHS parents and staff, and we hope you will consider volunteering at any of the upcoming build days. For specific dates and details, as well as to sign up, click HERE.
