Weekly Ticker - January 4, 2015

Week of January 4, 2015

  • Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas break. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday, January 6, for the second half of the school year.

  • Make your reservation to attend an all-school service project, the Empty Bowls event on Friday, January 23, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., in the Enrichment Center. All attendees will be served a simple meal of soup and bread and will be given a handmade bowl to take home as a reminder of those who do not have enough to eat. In exchange for the meal and bowl, a $10 donation per person is suggested. All proceeds from the event will be given to a hunger relief agency, which will be voted on that evening by the guests in attendance. To make your reservation to attend the event, please click HERE.

  • We are experiencing an unusually severe cold and flu season, and we need your help to prevent the spread of these illnesses. It is very important to keep your child at home if he or she has any of the following symptoms: fever, body aches, chills and sweats, persistent cough, fatigue/weakness or nasal congestion. For more guidelines about when to keep your child home from school, please click HERE.

  • We are excited to welcome renowned children’s author Mac Barnett on Wednesday and Thursday, January 7 and 8. He will speak to all grade levels about the writing process. To order a signed copy of one of his books, please click HERE to complete and submit an order form.

  • Have you checked out our new website? The newly redesigned website launched during Christmas break. All of the important links and information that current families need to know can be found in the Oakworthy menu located at the top of the homepage. The homepage also features a few new elements, including a blog, a prominently displayed school calendar and a section for upcoming community events. As standard with the launch of something as significant as a new website, we are still working through some minor tweaks. If you come across something that needs to be fine-tuned, we appreciate your patience as we make final adjustments.

  • Mini-class registration is now open for classes beginning the week of January 12. We are delighted to continue offering Taekwon-Do, Chess Club and private guitar and piano instruction. We are also pleased to introduce our newest offerings—Dance/Cardio, Junior Aerospace Engineering and Panther Power Yoga. All students registered for a mini-class can attend Explorations on their assigned class dates at no additional charge. Please click HERE for class descriptions and to register.

  • We are excited to welcome Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair, consultant, teacher and author of The Big Disconnect, as the next speaker in the Common Trust Speaker Series on Tuesday, February 24, at 6 p.m., in the OHS Enrichment Center. The event is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!

  • Students will be dismissed early on Tuesday, February 24, at 11:30 a.m., in order for teachers to attend professional development with Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair, the next speaker in the Common Trust Speaker Series. Explorations will be open to accommodate the half-day attendance.

  • SAVE THE DATE! The 4th annual Common Trust Cup Golf Tournament, held at the Golf Club of Tennessee, will be on Monday, April 27. Be on the lookout for more information about this important and fun event, which provides essential funds for the Common Trust Speaker Series.
