Lower School Science Specialist Job Description

Position Summary:

The elementary science curriculum provides a flexible program covering a range of topics and concepts, providing a basic understanding of scientific methods and supporting other classroom curriculum such as math or social studies.
The specific responsibilities of the Science Specialist include:

Collaborate with classroom teachers in the planning of science units and lessons.
o Create instructional resources for use in the classroom.
o Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities to elementary students in Grades PreK-3.
o Offer after school science activities throughout the year.
o Maintain science supplies and science lab.
o Facilitate hands-on, independent activities with students.
o Assist, support, and encourage students in development of new skills.
o Help students design their own research projects.

 

Responsibilities:
o Plan and implement science lessons based on required school standards.
o Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the school’s basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course standards.
o Work cooperatively with other teachers in planning and implementing a balanced science education program.
o Develop student strength, confidence, and well-being by cultivating student awareness and ownership of personal performance.
o Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly and productive environment.
o Continually assess student progress toward mastery of standards and keep students and parents well informed of student progress by collecting and tracking data.
o Provide accommodations and modifications for growth and success of all students.
o Attend all grade level and staff meetings, including Wednesday meetings that typically extend to 4:30pm, and attend designated school functions outside of school hours.
o Work with other teachers to proactively address and resolve student issues.
o Participate in school-wide professional development and seek continual feedback and coaching to develop as a teacher.
o Make self available to students, parents, and other staff members after school hours and on weekends by personal cell or home phone.
o Perform necessary duties including but not limited to morning arrival, lunch, dismissal, and after-school duties.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
o Bachelor’s Degree or higher and mastery of core subject.
o Minimum 2-5 years’ experience.
o Tennessee Teaching Licensure preferred.
o Excellent facilitator with the ability to motivate, direct, and train people and collaborate and interact with others effectively and productively.
o Exceptional analytical and quantitative skills with a strong attention to detail.
o Excellent written and oral communication skills.
o Commitment to excellence and ability to work both independently and in a collaborative environment.
o Demonstrated experience in organizing, conceptualizing and prioritizing objectives. o Adaptability in dealing with change, delays or unexpected events to ensure the general welfare of the school.
o Pass criminal background check and drug test.
