At Oak Hill School, we understand that each child is unique, and we value the gifts that every student brings to school each day. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion requires the support and participation of the entire school community to create a place in which a wide range of backgrounds, voices and viewpoints enrich the Oak Hill School experience for everyone.

Diversity and Inclusion at OHS

Diverse is synonymous with differences, encompassing all the many facets inherent to each of us. We define diversity broadly so that our children can see that we all have differences in who God created us to be. Inclusion emphasizes building a community in which the dignity of each individual is seen and included.

Diversity and inclusion go hand in hand. We seek to build an inclusive community that recognizes and celebrates the differences that God has given each of us, allowing every person to reach his or her greatest potential.

Our work to build an inclusive school community is driven out of a fundamental belief in the Christian mission of our school and the importance of equipping our children with the skills to navigate the connected and global world in which we live.

What Multicultural Means at OHS

Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new. At OHS, we work to shape students who possess open minds and the willingness to learn about the ideas, beliefs and customs of people of varying cultural backgrounds in order to view the world as a place full of unlimited opportunities for learning and growth.

Oak Hill School Statement of Inclusion and Community

At Oak Hill School, we believe that creating a community of love and belonging for all Oak Hill students is foundational to our mission. We believe that each person embodies a unique expression of God’s image. Our call is to build children’s empathy through the mirrors of self-reflection and windows of understanding into the range of backgrounds and experiences of others, preparing them to lead and serve in our dynamic, multicultural world. Most importantly, as a school, we seek to radiate the glory of God’s unconditional love.

Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan

Adopted by the Board of Trustees in 2019, the Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan outlines steps that guide our community in meeting goals to turn philosophy into practice. The overarching goals of the strategic plan include:


Deliver a window and mirror curriculum that both affirms a children’s understanding of themselves and expands their understanding of other people. Learning resources that act as windows allow students to see backgrounds and perspectives that differ from their own. Mirror resources provide students the opportunity for self-reflection of their reality. A balance of both windows and mirrors are necessary in education to develop empathetic students who possess a deeper understanding of a diverse world and their place in it.

To Include:

      • Review grade-level curriculum and subject areas to identify blind spots
      • Incorporate learning resources to create an environment that acknowledges and embraces the backgrounds and identities of all students.


Expand our marketing and recruitment reach to better represent the communities of the Greater Nashville area. Research shows that students benefit from a learning environment that includes a diversity of perspectives and experiences that are different from their own.

To Include:

      • Increase the number of students of color enrolled at OHS.
      • Expand into untapped areas of the city to broaden our pool of applicants.


Steward and grow a diverse professional community to create a culture of deep curiosity and understanding to reflect diversity and inclusivity within our community.

To Include:

      • Increase faculty of color and gender diversity among faculty and staff.
      • Build a community to support facult and staff of color.
      • Prepare faculty and staff for educating a more diverse professional community and student body.


Deepen community engagement and service to develop stronger relationships with local organizations.

To Include:

      • Create new relationships with surrounding business and churches to assess the needs of our community and work together to strengthen programs.


Build a community where every child and family feels like they belong by nurturing a school culture that acknowledges, honors and celebrates difference.

To Include:

      • Evaluate and measure the degree to which students and families feel included.



Financial aid helps ensure an Oak Hill School education is accessible to a wider range of mission-appropriate students. Our goal is to increase financial aid funding to allow for greater socio-economic diversity within our school community.



Ensure the school’s diversity and inclusion values are reflected in the written policies and core documents of the school.
